The Sky Eye Set

Sonia G The Sky Eye Set Sky Brush Set ($160.00) is a new, eye-focused brush set from the brand that features five new brushes. As always, the brand has stated they will release the brushes individually in the future if the interest is there. I’m hopeful that we’ll see them sold individually, though, because the brush sets have always been the same as purchasing the brushes individually, so being able to mix and match based on eye shape and needs/preferences is nice. The set launches today, November 19th, at 10AM PT.

The Jumbo Blender is ideal for someone who often wears one or two eyeshadows in a look, needs help with blending, or does a lot of all-over application of a single shade (whether to set a base or something else). The Classic Crease has a more rounded edge than the crease brushes in the Pro set, so it’ll deliver softer, less precise and more blown out results, which may or may not be what one is looking for it; the size is also classic and may feel a bit oversized for those with smaller eyes.

The Mini Booster is the smallest crease brush by the brand to-date, and it should work well on a variety of eye shapes and sizes, though it will pack quite a bit of pigment as it is denser than most crease brushes. The Flat Definer looks a bit like a mini shader brush but it is definitely flatter and a bit firmer, though not floppy or overly sharp at the edge; it is definitely small and will be geared toward more precise lay down of product or for lining. The Soft Shader is the most versatile brush in the set, as it is was more medium in size but still could apply color on the lid or all-over, blend it out or soften the edges, and it could also work to apply product to the brow bone or lower lash line.

I can see myself using the Mini Booster the most, followed by the Soft Shader, but the remaining three are ones that I’m not certain I’ll reach for much–they were all soft, well-made, and consistent in quality and presentation with other Sonia G. brushes, but they’re just not shapes that work as well for my application needs! As I have more time to use the brushes, if anything changes, I’ll be sure to update this review.

Jumbo Blender

Sonia G Jumbo Blender Brush is supposed to work as an “all-over base brush” that can work with sheerer eyeshadows but also works as a “fixer” to correct “uneven application instantly.” It is a medium-to-large eye brush, so if you have smaller eyes or tend to reach for smaller brushes for detailed application, this brush might feel too large.

It is comparable in size to the Worker One; the Jumbo Blender is denser, thicker, and wider, so it has more of a buffing quality to it. The latter is why it does work for diffusing and softening uneven edges. The larger size also makes it conducive to more one-and-done kind of work, so someone who wants to apply a single eyeshadow all over the lid, whether to set a base (as suggested) or an actual eyeshadow.

Unlike a buffing brush, it isn’t round or circular, and it still comes to a more tapered edge, so it can fit more horizontally into the crease. The denseness enables it to press and pack on eyeshadow onto the mobile lid, too. The bristles were soft, moved well against my lid/eye area, and the brush head retained its shape after washing.

I think the brush can be versatile but will be more dependent on how complex your eyeshadow looks tend to be; when working with a greater number of eyeshadow shades, as I do, it was too large for my preference, so it functioned better as a blending brush or applying product to the inner tear duct area. It also worked to pat powder underneath my eye area. For eye looks with a few shades, it would make quick work of applying one shade all-over the lid or really blowing out crease color upward.

Classic Crease

Sonia G Classic Crease Brush is a medium-sized crease brush that tapers to a more rounded dome shape (rather than a more noticeable point), and it is aptly named Classic–it is very much modeled after the typical crease brush. It is less-dense, slightly more yielding compared to the Blender Pro, narrower and less tapered compared to the Crease Two. It is slightly larger than the Crease Pro and has a more domed edge.

The Classic Crease would work better for someone who is heavy-handed or prefers to build up coverage, whereas the Blender Pro, Crease Pro, and Crease Two pack a bit more color initially wherever the brush head is first placed. The bristles were soft, smooth, and comfortable to use in any direction, whether in buffing, circular, or sweeping motions. It also retained its shape well after washing.

Mini Booster

Sonia G Mini Booster Brush is a small, subtly-rounded crease brush that tapered slightly along the edges. It is the smallest crease brush in the line, and it seemed narrower and less tapered compared to the Crease Pro (which is closest in size but is still bigger). Per the brand, this is a “baby version of the Blender Pro” and is designed for working in “smaller areas” or “with hooded eyes.”

It is significantly denser than the majority of smaller crease brushes I’ve encountered, and the edge is soft, domed with a hint of definition, so it can fit well into the crease and deposit a lot of product but can also move and spread it out for a diffused result. More pointed crease brushes can sometimes deposit color too heavily wherever initially placed, so the rounder shape here is particularly useful because of the brush’s density (which yields greater pick up in a single go).

The brush was soft, smooth, and comfortable to use in buffing, circular, sweeping, tapping, and patting motions–I never felt the individual bristles no matter the direction or action I took with it. The brush head retained its shape well after washing.

Flat Definer

Sonia G Flat Definer Brush is described as a “mini shader, smudger, and flattened pencil brush” that is supposed to be “stable at the tip” for “neat and even application.” It’s very thin without being floppy, and it is slightly thicker at the base as it narrows toward the edge of the brush, which is rounded overall. For someone with a smaller eye shape or who does really detailed work, this brush could be quite useful.

It is a fairly small brush, definitely in the vein of a brow or liner brush, but in a more classic shader shape. In some ways, it reminded me of a stubby take on a lip brush, as it was denser and a bit firmer like a lip brush. Depending on the angle, the ferrule was sometimes noticeable, but it was less noticeable compared to Builder One, which felt thicker in the hand overall (which isn’t surprising given the difference in handle styles). It functioned similarly to Builder One but achieved more precision when used to apply product to the inner tearduct or lid. I found it useful for getting a shimmery highlighter right under my brow bone without blowing out the shimmer too brush, so it was quite precise.

The edge was comfortable along the lower lash line and never felt sharp when held horizontally against it, but it still had good movement. The rounded edge did take some getting used to for me as a liner brush, and it performed best for me when I used shorter strokes to apply, and as marketed, it delivered a softer line of product. 

For smudging out eyeshadow or eyeliner, I felt a pencil brush worked better and more efficiently for that purpose, though this brush could do it in a pinch (the Soft Shader was better within the set for smudging).  This brush did work well for picking up product and precisely laying it down over smaller areas, like adding eyeshadow over an eyeliner (and not wanting it to be really smudged or diffused).

Soft Shader

Sonia G Soft Shader Brush is a medium-sized, thicker eyeshadow brush that can be used to apply product to the lid, though I felt it could work well for depositing color into the crease, for blending, for all-over application, for diffusing transition shades, or getting color into the inner tearduct. The bristles come to a more tapered shape that is rounded at the very edge.

The shape is what I imagine a blending brush would look like if flattened and doubled in density, and it seemed as versatile. I could see this being a brush that could be used for an entire look, though it might be a bit large for some eye shapes and could pack too much pigment because of its density (for those who are already heavy-handed or prefer sheerer coverage).

The brush was comfortable to use in any direction and in any manner I tried, from blending to buffing to packing on color, the brush moved fluidly, so I didn’t feel any individual bristles. There were a few bristles that fluffed up a bit after washing, but it retained its shape overall.
