Pat McGrath Celestial Divinity Mega MTHRSHP Palette Review & Swatches
Celestial Divinity
($78.00 for 0.684 oz.) is a new, limited edition mega-sized palette with 18 shades that they’re between a dime and quarter in size and are most comparable in size (weight) to last year’s Eye Ecstasy palettes. A typical full-sized eyeshadow is around 0.05 oz., and each of the eyeshadows in the palette is 0.038 oz., so there’s plenty of product. They are about half the size or less than the brand’s regular MTHRSHPs and original Mothership palettes. The individual pans are large enough that there are no issues getting a variety of eye brushes into each shade.
12 of the eyeshadows–the two left-most columns and two right-most columns–are shades from the Star Wars MTHRSHP palettes released last year, which were very quick to sell out and one of the more frustrating Pat McGrath launches to-date. I’m exceedingly happy to see the brand bring them back in some form–I love that people who missed out will be able to get the shades if that was what appealed to them. I’d rather more people enjoy it than less; those who paid more or put in more time for the original release have already had the benefit of using those palettes for almost a year now.
The quality of the palette was fantastic–there were no duds and only a couple of shades with anything really “negative” to mention–but almost every shade was intensely pigmented, had good adhesion, blended out readily, and had good wear. Lunar Champagne was the “weakest” to me, as it was chunkier and more loosely-pressed, so it applied better with a fingertip or a dampened brush to minimize fallout.
The quality, texture, and colors were very consistent with the past releases of the shades, too, which is always nice to see. I know that my biggest concern with this palette and its price point (I had guessed closer to $125 to compete with Natasha Denona’s 28-pan midi from last year) and whether there’d be a drop in quality, but I’m thrilled to report that it was extremely consistent (more so than a lot of brands, actually!).
I think the palette is one of the less cohesive color stories released by the brand, which is part of what makes pre-made palettes more compelling to purchase. It’s more of a complementary palette than a standalone as it is dominated by shimmer–only three shades are matte–but would work well paired with your favorite matte eyeshadows.
Like a lot of holiday releases, this seems geared toward getting new customers or passerbys of the brand–someone who pays attention but doesn’t usually end up purchasing. The packaging should feel “better” than the Eye Ecstasy packaging, and I didn’t find it particularly cheap or different than a typical cardboard palette. The magnetic closure felt stronger than average, and I imagine this is why the eyeshadows are positioned closer to the lid as well.
Of course, the packaging is a massive departure from the original Mothership packaging, but it is significantly cheaper, too… everything I’ve heard and learned from the industry is that packaging is often the excessive cost of a product. If you’re big on packaging, then you might be disappointed, but if you’re all about the actual product inside, the palette is consistent with the brand’s formula across various palettes and releases and well-worth consideration if you enjoy the formula (and don’t have the shades yet) or have always wanted to try the brand.

Saturnalia
Saturnalia is a brighter, medium-dark red with warmer undertones and flecks of pink and gold micro-sparkle over a softer sheen. The eyeshadow had opaque color payoff in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out without issue. The texture was slightly firmer and denser in the pan compared to other shades in the palette but not in a way that made it hard to pick up or to use–and I’d say the lower-level shimmer shades tend to be a bit firmer relative to the more metallic shades in general. It lasted well for 10 hours before fading a bit.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Bronze Nebula
Bronze Nebula is a medium-dark copper with strong, warm reddish-bronze undertones and a golden shimmer that gave it a soft, metallic finish. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was soft and yielding without being powdery or too loosely-pressed in the pan. I actually felt the texture was improved over the Star Wars’ release of it. This shade wore well for 10 hours before fading noticeably.

Major Mahogany is a deeper, reddish-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was soft, very lightly powdery but was blendable and had enough substance for it to deliver opaque coverage that didn’t sheer out too readily or lose its intensity when applied and blended out. It stayed on nicely for 10 hours before fading visibly.

Lunar Champagne
Lunar Champagne is a light gold with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage with a slightly drier, more loosely-pressed texture, so there was light fallout when I worked with it using a dry brush. With a fingertip or a dampened brush, fallout wasn’t a concern, and the coverage did ramp up to nearly opaque. It lasted well for 10 hours but had a touch of fallout over time.

The eyeshadow had opaque color payoff that adhered well to bare skin and blended out easily. The consistency was soft, a smidgen powdery in the pan, but it adhered evenly and blended out well. This shade lasted nicely for nine and a half hours before fading visibly.

Odyssey has a medium, warmer plum base with a sparkling finish that shifted subtly from lavender to copper with contrasting shimmer. It had opaque color coverage paired with a soft, smooth consistency that felt slightly more loosely-pressed compared to some metallics in the palette so it needed to be used with slightly less pressure to avoid fallout. This shade wore well for 10 hours before creasing faintly.

Fuchsia Shock is a medium-dark berry with strong, cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had intense pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of product. The texture was dense without being too stiff or difficult to pick up, and it applied evenly to bare skin. It functioned almost as a “semi-matte” as it had a lot less shine compared to other metallics in the palette. It stayed on well for 10 hours before showing signs of fading.

CosmiK has a warmer, peachy-copper base with an intense duochrome that shifted from pink-to-violet with a shiny, metallic finish. The texture was smooth, soft, and lightly creamy with good substance so that all of the shimmer and micro-sparkles stayed together and actually adhered to bare skin. I actually felt the texture had more slip and held together better in this follow-up than the original release. It had opaque color coverage that lasted well for 10 hours before fading a bit.

Smoked Amethyst has a blackened, slightly purplish base with flecks of finer purple and red pearl that gave it a low-level, pearly sheen. Dragonfly
Dragonfly is a rich, reddish-brown base with an intense, duochrome shift from green-to-gold paired with a metallic finish. The eyeshadow had excellent pigmentation in a single layer, which applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of product. The consistency was soft, smooth, and creamy without being too dense or too firmly-pressed into the pan. It stayed on well for 10 hours before showing signs of fading.

Venusian Orchid
Venusian Orchid is a medium pink with moderate, warmer undertones and a matte finish. The texture was soft, silky, and blendable but was a smidgen dusty in the pan (though didn’t seem prone to fallout or sheering out too readily). It had good color payoff that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. There were signs of fading present after nine and a half hours.

Galactic Gold
Galactic Gold is a lighter gold with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish with a very subtle, greenish-shift or tinge at certain angles. It functioned to make it appear not-as-warm-toned as other golds in the palette, and the green came out to play more visibly when paired with cooler/greener shades. The texture was soft, slightly loosely-pressed compared to other metallics, but it adhered well when pressed and patted into place. It wore nicely for 10 hours before fading noticeably.

Corruption
Corruption has a deeper, plummy base with a shift from brighter, pinky-plum to copper to dirty green. It almost looked like a multichrome to me at times as there was a more distinctive shift between plum-copper-green but the green tinge was quite subtle. The texture was smooth, moderately dense, and slightly more firmly-pressed compared to some of the other metallics, but it was easy to pick up with a dry brush and great adhesion. The opaque coverage stayed on well for 10 hours before fading a bit.

I ordered this on launch day and I’m so excited to get it. I’m glad to see the high scores and beautiful looks.
Did you get yours yet? I also ordered on launch day and haven’t gotten mine yet, which is unusual for me (although I know others have had issues when ordering direct from the company).
I bought the second it was released and STILL don’t have a shipping notification.
I haven’t either, I reached out to them yesterday and they asked for patience due to how busy they are.
I also reached out to them on Friday since I hadn’t received a shipping notification. (I bought it in the first minute it went on sale) I got a canned answer about Covid slowing things down but I did receive a shipping notification today.
I got mine yesterday, FWIW it got to me like 1 or 2 days after the shipping notification arrived — so the wait may be over quickly once you get that email!
No, I just got my shipping info on Friday. I actually wrote to their customer care because I’d waited a week and hadn’t heard anything. First, I got an auto response and then I got something a bit more specific and then the shipping info within a couple of hours.

I definitely want this if I can figure it into my budget. I only have three of the shades from other palettes.
I have so many of her other palettes that I certainly don’t feel like I *need* this. But, given the quality, I do *want* it, but not bad enough to splurge. I’m going to wait to see how the quads perform and how dupeable they are before I give in (I’m sure there will eventually be another sale as well.)
The score is great news. I have no plans to purchase this palette but I have been known to change my mind. As always, I am inspired by the looks you create.
I received my palette on Thursday or Friday (forget when), and I am NOT disappointed. I don’t have either of the previous Star Wars palettes so all the shades are new to me in this formula. I love that I can whip it out for a completely effortless, high-glam, high-impact look; it takes less than 5 minutes for me to create a gorgeous eye with these shadows. Violet Void is a favorite of mine, and it looks STUNNING with my green eyes. So pleased to see you enjoyed this palette, too!

I appreciate your comments on packaging as well, but I can’t simply pass the fact that the ribbons holding the mirror snapped on Alicia from kinkysweat during her review.
I would hope that brands would do more testing on packaging durability. People are expected to use palettes regularly for at least 1-3 years, depending on formula. If the shades are amazing but packaging isn’t durable and functional, what’s the point?
I didn’t experience that issue myself, but I’d certainly try exchanging it if that occurred and was a problem! Does that just make it so the lid doesn’t stay upright when open? The way you’re describing it makes me think that the exterior is still protecting/keeping the eyeshadows safe and closing, just that it isn’t staying open at an angle (the lid) but maybe I’m reading it wrong and the mirror shattered!
Only the ribbons snapped, so the mirror/lid flips back and cannot stand, nothing broke or shattered. But for the price and brand I would expect some kind of better quality hinges.

The pan sizes are actually slightly larger than a US quarter, not a dime. And half the product in each pan than in her regular sizes, so as Christine noted, there is quite a lot of product still.

Realistically, I shouldn’t want this palette, as I do have the SW Dark Star, plus Corruption, Bronze and Gold Standard. But I DO. I will try my best to quell that longing, though, because the Quads are coming next week. I’m just thinking to myself that those may swatch as more unique shades than I’m assuming. And so I’ll wait before I jump in any kind of way.
Mine is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday and I can’t wait! I’m so happy it scored well and is consistent with past releases.
I got mine the other day and have used it the last couple of days. I’m glad that you mentioned it being more of a complimentary palette, because I have had to bring in other mattes and even some of her special sparkly shades from other palettes for me to fell like I had that full Pat McGrath experience. I was one of the ones that missed out on the Star Wars palettes last year so I’m thrilled to finally be able to try them, and at this price point? That’s amazing! I’ve been satisfied with the quality and the way the looks have turned out. I look forward to continuing to work with this palette and trying the other shades.
This is a lovely palette but not for me. Because my eyes are older, i need more mattes and fewer sparkles of various types.
I am in my 50’s and don’t care. They will bury me in sparkles!
Good for you! I was like that until recently. Still am for most makeup. I’m now in my 70s and have some crepey areas that love to pocket the sparkles. I still use them. Just differently and a bit less.

I’m impatiently awaiting confirmation mine has shipped. I’ve been kicking myself since the Star Wars release for not picking up the gold 6 pan after I saw Mel Thompson look she created with it. That’s the first look I’m going to do and then use megabyte and gigabyte from Subversive together. ????

When the promos first came out, I was afraid this was going to be inaccessibly priced, so I was delightfully surprised that these were smaller pans for a more affordable price (and I had not gotten either of the Star Wars palettes). I hope this is a trend she keeps up to keep her products more accessible.
I was really expecting it to be PMG’s answer to ND’s Metropolis from last year (that midi, 28-pan format, which was $129), so I was thinking this would be closer to the $100+ mark.

An absolutely stunning, stunning palette and every shade is a winner. For those who have missed out on the Star Wars release, this will be especially wonderful for them.
Personally, there are few too many pink shades for me to get the most value out of this palette and the price here in Australia, if it is even going to be sold here (and a lot of PMG’s are not available in Aus) will be astronomical.

I would be surprised if this sold out; I think they would have made a lot of these… only reason it might be less would be manufacturing issues from the year that is 2020. It just seems like it was designed to be a mega launch!
Given that nothing in the PML line ever seems to die (I’m looking at ya, Decadence) I doubt that this will sell out permanently. Especially since it seems to be pitched as an “intro-level” palette for those who want to sample the line without shelling out a lot of cash.
She did bring back that very popular Blitz quad from Holiday 2019 because it sold out early.
While Christine’s review has persuaded me to buy, I’m waiting for Black Friday or the next 20% off sale. I don’t see the point of jumping at the launch (unless you’re a makeup reviewer) since PML takes so long to ship. Multiple excuses every time!
GOOD point. I couldn’t believe how long it took me to receive the foundation and brushes and powder package. I have never written a ‘hey, where’s my’ email in my life–have lots of makeup and can be patient (although I’m on the verge about my JUNE 22nd Clionadh order that I’ve heard nothing about!!), but I was composing one to PML when I finally got an email that my order had shipped. I guess I’m trying to give Clionadh the same benefit of the doubt *plus* Covid fairness, but this is getting ridiculous.
Off-topic, but I wonder if the Too Faced guys ever get annoyed that shades like these were in their palettes starting at least 5 to 7 years ago, and people weren’t losing their minds over the duochrome goodness then. I noticed some of the dupes were shades I had when I first started getting into makeup, 9 years ago now!
Boy, I am so glad I read your review today as my finger was hovering over the complete purchase button! I have two of the Star Wars palette and if I already own most of the shades it doesn’t make sense to buy it buuuut I still do because I love that they are all in one palette with that gorgeous looking olive gold color. I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that she’s charging nearly 80 dollars for cardboard packaging… never in a million years would I pay that. Packaging might be expensive, but 78 dollars is not within the realm of affordable.
Hi! Do you mind sharing what types of brushes you find to be effective in working with Pat McGrath eyeshadows?

I can’t recall a brush… not working with it? I’ve used dense brushes, more feathery ones, big, small, flat, firm, fluffy, etc.!
AH i have a couple of hourglass brushes I mainly use and I seem to have to really dig to get them pick up color from these shadows. The cheapie Sephora brushes I have also don’t work particularly well. I’ll try looking around for a few new brushes. I can’t seem to get the color payoff that people rave about (and that I can visibly see in your photos) with her eyeshadows and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Everything looks so muddy because I can’t get enough pigment to apply. :(. Hard times, indeed haha.
Most of my brushes are natural hair, so that might be the difference! I know I’ve used it with the newer MAC 239 that is synthetic these days and been fine…
On the mattes, I always use a fluffy brush, but on the shimmers, I typically find my fingertip works best. Not my preferred application technique, but I find it hard to pick up the color with a brush and get the saturation I want (and I find brushes with her shimmer shades create a lot of fallout that’s hard to clean up).
Other than my fingers I have found that the best tool to apply shimmer or metallic shades from any brand is those cheap foam applicators that are often included with drugstore eyeshadows. You can use them wet or dry, the pointed end helps to target smaller areas like the inner corner, and I never have a problem with fallout.
There are a lot of things about this palette I really don’t like (all personal preferences), but it’s nice to see something quite a bit less expensive than her mothership palettes offered up. I did notice that for all the colors that caught my eye I have dupes (or near enough) between Melt and PMG’s little palettes.
Hmm. I don’t have any palettes from Pat McGrath so maybe I will buy this one! But I’d like it on sale. Hopefully it sticks around a bit longer.

I am STILL waiting. I bought it the day after launch day, and it will finally come to me, in California on the 12th. I have plenty of mattes to pair with this pallet. I am 62, but still have pretty good eyelids, despite being hooded, so I just use glitter glue, and put shimmers on my lid ( not outer lid), my inner corners and a tiny bit on brow bone arch. Jen Froese suggested Mehron mixing medium on her review, because Pat McGrath makeup artist’s use it for the shimmer shades. I bought some on Amazon, to try out. All the reviews are great and I am retired, so can wear what I want, whenever. I love color, color makes me happy!
I finally pulled the trigger after reading your review and I’m glad I did. I’d always hoped the Star Wars collection would come back out since I missed out on everything, but this is the next best thing. So I’m excited to get this one!
I just used this palette for the first time today…. it’s a DREAM, especially if you love plums and purples. Which I do.
As one of the people who paid for some of the special editions last year, I am ecstatic that more people can enjoy these! I hope PMG labs has changed the frankly problematic way they seemed to encourage excessive impulse purchases, collecting, and predatory resellers (they are not the only ones who do this of course, it bears noting). And having some more affordable palettes I see people in my region being able to get excited about because they can get them and feel part of the beauty community – I love PMG for this. I won’t buy it cause I have enough Motherships to last me a lifetime (Unless she comes out with a green or purple version of Divine Rose) but I was very stoked for this. People in poor countries deserve good quality makeup too.
Okay, I didn’t purchase it for Christmas (because I was turned around by Karla Cosmetics’ Multi Chromes; however, I have a question about it? It seems as though the pans are very shallow (as in not deep). I don’t mind less product for a lesser price, but I don’t like very thin wells. Could someone comment on that? Thanks in advance because I’m still considering purchasing this PMG palette despite having a lot of dupes for certain colors.
