ByAlegory Acrylic Makeup Organizers & Storage Solutions

ByAlegory Organizer

ByAlegory Organizers are acrylic containers designed to fit various types of makeup. They have a range of sizes/types of organizers, and I picked up one of almost all (they came out with another style after I bought mine) to take a look at, see how they fit different types of makeup, and of course, to share that information with you. In general, I think these types of organizers are great for someone with a stash that will fit them OR for storing go-to/daily products, but if you have a lot of product, acrylic organizers add up quickly!  The acrylic felt sturdy and scratch-resistant enough for regular use; it didn’t feel cheap or thin.  They can be used vertically or horizontally, though I’ve shown them all horizontally (or flat, if you prefer). The organizers are available in different colors, as well, which isn’t as common with acrylic systems: Clear, Pink Clear, Purple Clear, Black Clear, White Solid, Black Solid.

Worth noting, since I bought these, I have seen the brand have regular sales/incentives, so there is that to watch for, and they are sold through Amazon Prime (also known as one of the best things ever), which is where I purchased all of mine.

ByAlegory Lipstick Organizer ($14.89) is a short, long tray with three columns (eight slots each for a total of 24 slots) designed to hold lipstick. It measures 8.6″ in length, 3.5″ in width, and 1.4″ in height with 0.85″ interior compartments. It holds a variety of lipsticks across many brands, and the wells are deep enough to keep most sizes upright, though they could easily extend the height by a half of an inch to ensure greater stability across some of the slimmer-style tubes. Things that fit: A lot of lipsticks (I tried Bobbi Brown, Chanel, Dior, MAC, NARS, Urban Decay)

ByAlegory Oversized Lipstick Organizer ($12.99) is a smaller, rectangular-shaped tray with three columns (four slots each for a total of 12 slots) designed for larger-shaped tubes. It measures 5.19″ in length, 4.02″ in width, and 1.18″ in height with 1.02″ square, interior slots. The standard lipstick organizer fits a fair number of brands, but more square-shaped and decorative tubes tend not to fit, so this is the option for storing those. Things that fit: Tom Ford Lipstick (full-size), Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick, Buxom Lipstick, Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lipsticks, Givenchy Le Rouge, Guerlain Rouge Automatiques (if you have label facing up, the slider won’t fit in the standard holder), YSL Rouge Volupte Lipsticks

ByAlegory Lipgloss Organizer ($23.99) is designed to fit taller, narrower tubes of product. It measures 8.6″ in length, 3.5″ in width, and 3″ in height with .85″ square, interior slots (you’ll want to measure from the widest point of the lipgloss/product that will be in the container). It can hold up to 24 items. It definitely accommodates lipgloss well, but it can also house liquid lipsticks, eyeliners, lip liners, thinner-handled brushes (probably not your favorite face brushes, but most eye brushes fit fine in it). This was one of the most versatile units that I tried; I felt like there was little in the way of “tube-shaped things” that wouldn’t fit. Things that fit: Most liquid lipsticks (including Kat Von D, ColourPop, Anastasia), most lipglosses (I couldn’t find a formula that didn’t fit), eyeshadow pencils, lipstick crayons, most face brushes (even some of my thicker Marc Jacobs face brushes fit in easily)

ByAlegory Cream Shadow Organizer ($13.99) is a short tray with square-sized compartments designed to fit small compacts and pots. It measures 11″ in length, 5″ in width, and 0.75″ in height with interior compartments of 2″ in length and 2″ in width. The tray is really short, so it works well for short drawers and spaces. The organizer is ideal for someone who likes to store their products and visually be able to see the color/shade instantly. Smaller gel eyeliners and cream eyeshadows fit with some space around them, so they shift a little in their respective compartment. I wish each compartment was a little wider, perhaps 2.25″ as it fell just shy of holding smaller-sized blushes (Clinique Cheek Pops) and larger eyeshadows (like MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows, MAC Large Eyeshadows, Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadows).  It is a shallow tray, so while you can keep things on their side, it doesn’t feel quite as secure as would be ideal, but if you keep yours in a drawer and aren’t moving the trays often, it could work. Things that fit: ColourPop Blushes barely(!) fit, MAC Paint Pots, MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots, MAC Fluidlines, Chanel Illusion d’Ombres, ColourPop Super Shock Shadows, L’Oreal Mono Eyeshadows, Illamasqua

ByAlegory Eyeshadow Organizer ($19.99) is a two-column tray (16 slots in all) designed for smaller compacts, like eyeshadow. It measures 8.6″ in length, 4.73″ in width, and 1″ in height while each compartment’s interior dimensions are 2″ in length, 0.86″ in width, and 0.78″ in height. It’s a smaller organizer, and it really does seem to fit primarily single eyeshadows best; anything blush-size doesn’t fit and some of the more rounded compacts sit a little higher in the compartment but are close enough to fitting that it isn’t a concern (it would be if these were stacking or you had a very short drawer you were putting these into). Things that fit: MAC Mineralize/Large Eyeshadows, NARS Single Eyeshadows, NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadows, MAC Eyeshadows, Burberry Eyeshadows, ColourPop Super Shock Shadows, Urban Decay Eyeshadows, Milani Eyeshadows, L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadows

ByAlegory Palette Organizer ($29.99) is a larger, customizable organizer that can have up to eight distinct compartments, but you can remove the dividers to create larger compartments if desired, and you can fit more than one palette in each slot (even as-is) depending on the thickness of the palettes you’re putting in it. It measures 9.75″ in length, 9.5″ in width, and 2.7″ in height with interior compartments measuring 1″ in length, 8.6″ in width, and 2.3″ in height.  I love that there’s some ability to customize here, which at least lets you stack even more palettes (say all your Nakeds) together if desired.  You can also double or triple up for slimmer palettes.   They’ve also released a Small Palette Organizer ($25.99). Things that fit: Any palette that is shorter than 8.6″, as the width can be customized and each compartment is larger than almost all palettes (except a few bulky holiday mega sets); notably, Natasha Denona palettes were just a little too long to fit.

ByAlegory Compact Organizer ($19.99) is a short, single-column tray that can hold eight slim compacts. It measures 8.6″ in length, 3.5″ in width, and 2″ in height with interior dimensions of 2.95″ in length, 0.90″ in width, and 2″ in height for each slot. This is more accommodating for most blushes but doesn’t quite fit larger products like MAC Beauty Powders/Mineralize Skinfinishes perfectly (they sit about a half inch above the bottom of the compartment). Things that fit: MAC Mineralize Blush, Chanel Blush, Burberry Blush, Clinique Cheek Pops, MAC Blush, NARS Blush, Tarte Blush, theBalm Blush, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors

ByAlegory Oversized Compact Organizer ($24.99) is a large tray with two columns with five slots each (10 in total) designed to hold larger compacts. It measures 10″ in length, 8.5″ in width, and 2.6″ in height with each compartment’s interior dimensions being 3″ in length, 1.75″ in width, and 2.16″ in height. This is the most free-form of their offerings, as the larger slots can store a slew of products, from small to large, tall to short.  What’s nice about this one is that you can use it for larger compacts, as intended, or you can adjust and store different parts of your everyday routine in it as well. Things that fit: Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Blushes, Slimmer Palettes, MAC Eyeshadow Quads (and most other eyeshadow quads), Loose Powders, Foundation Bottles, Perfume, MAC Mineralize Skinfinishes, Physicians Formula Powders

ByAlegory Eye/Lip Liner Organizer ($19.99) is designed to fit very tall, narrow cylinder-shaped products, like eyeliners and lip liners. It measures 5″ in length, 2.16″ in width, 2.16″ in height with two interior-sized slots–20 0.34″ round slots and 6 0.50″ round slots. Of all the organizers, this was the least useful to me; I think the slots are a little tight for some eyeliners with caps (a lot of eyeliners have the colored end/label on the end, not the cap-side).  It worked well for holding most eyeliners, most eye brushes, larger eye crayons, and smaller face brushes (a lot of my Japanese cheek/highlighter brushes fit). Things that fit: Most pencil liners (Urban Decay, Sephora, Stila, Marc Jacobs, MAC, Zoeva, Tom Ford, Chanel, Illamasqua), NYX Jumbo Pencils (in large slot only), brushes (with narrower tapers–a lot of eye brushes fit no problem in the larger slots, smaller face brushes)

Eeee! Yay. I love when you do makeup storage posts — yours are always so detailed! No other makeup blog features as many good-quality photos and comparison info about organizers 🙂 Thanks!

Ginny Avatar

These don’t really fit my storage strategy… except the palette organizers. I could really use one of those. I appreciate these organizing posts 🙂

Christina Avatar

This is a perfect post, Christine! I’ve been eyeing these organizers for a while, but wasn’t sure which one I really needed. This help tremendously, so thank you!

I am curious if these fit in Ikea Alex storage units, though, especially the shallower drawers. I’ll have to measure carefully before purchasing any!

Christine Avatar

Not totally sure how shallow they get on the tall units. I have one of the shorter, wider Alex units but none of the skinny ones (which are more popular). But I’d definitely measure the interior + any additional height of what you’d put in it (in the case of say, a lipstick organizer).

This is THRILLING. Thank you for the review. This will satisfy all my, ahem, strident needs for uprightness and uniformity. Just this weekend I was lamenting my liquid lipsticks tipping out of my regular-sized lipstick compartments and how my eyeliners flop around in their acrylic bins. THRILLED! 🙂

woodstock_schulz Avatar

I live just north of Toronto, and I bought some similar acrylic organizers at Storage Solutions this past weekend, after seeing this post. Not cheap, but not super expensive either, and they had ones with dividers that could be taken out/adjusted, different sizes, etc. Not sure what the price for these particular ones (ByAlegory) for Canadians, but I at least saved shipping and duties.

K Avatar

Love these…..I had the acrylic draws and had to throw them out. They would never close properly.
You featured some new styles that I haven’t seen before. Thanks

Katherine T. Avatar

Wow, some great organizers here! I like how you can see everything because for me, out of sight, out of mind. And I’m DROOLING over your great stash of Tom Ford, Colour Pop, BITE, etc.

Katherine T. Avatar

Oh, I need that big palette organizer in my life! Right now, I have palettes stacked against each other, as I haven’t been able to find dividers for them. I got home, measured the space, and it fits, so will put an order in with some Amazon gift cards, once I catch a sale/promo.

Nicole Avatar

These are my main way of organizing my makeup. They’re great! They are certainly very sturdy. I use some of them a little differently though. I have a pretty big lipstick collection, so instead of using the lipstick holders I use two oversized compact organizers-using them takes up less space vs. using the lipstick holders. I can generally fit 10 regular sized lipsticks/4-7 oversized lipsticks (4 for lipsticks like Guerlain’s KissKiss tubes, but then I can fit 4-5 regular sized lipsticks in with them as well) into each “compact” space. I also put the few liquid lipsticks/lip glosses I have into them, so really those two oversized compact organizers fit my whole lip product collection and there’s still room to spare. I do keep my palettes in the palette organizer, which I love. I tend to stack the slimmer ones (like Kat Von D), on their side rather than opening-down, so that I can fit a lot of them right next to each other in each slot and I can still see which one is which-my makeup table is pretty long so it can be difficult to see them if they’re below the edge of the organizer or one in front of the other in the same slot. And I use my lipgloss organizer to hold my mascara wands as well as my eyeshadow sticks and my lone Rouge Bunny Rouge loose glitter pigment. I love the idea of putting brushes in the eye/lip liner organizers! That sounds like it would be really convenient.

These look wonderful. I’ve already added several to my Amazon wish list. Thank you, Christine, for such a thorough rundown on these organizers. Your photos are so helpful, too!

LaMaitresse Avatar

OH wow, these are fantastic, and so well priced! I finally found my mirrored vanity, after a 2 year search, and I have a lovely leather storage ottoman for my the rest of my stash that doesn’t fit in the two large deep drawers. Even though I have some smart items for organizing, some of these solutions are too great not to pass up! Many thanks for posting!

Alice Avatar

I love some of these, but man I can’t have anything out on my vanity or my cats will knock it off or carry it away. Everything has to be in a drawer. (we don’t even have our toothbrushes out)

I suppose if one day I switched from my vanity + mini plastic drawer organizers to an organizer with shelves or large drawers, these would be perfect for some of my stuff.

Bonnie Avatar

Thanks for reviewing these organizers! I’m always looking for a better way to store my makeup. I’m thinking about ordering the small palette organizer & large lipstick holder. Right now I don’t have anything sized for my Guerlain, TF, and Marc Jacobs lipsticks.
Did you happen to test Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadows for fit in any of the holders? I have a decent amount of those but haven’t found a good way to store them.

Pearl Avatar

Great pictures to show the storage capacity and dimensions! I have all of them but the gloss and lipstick holders – I didn’t know byAlegory made them at the time I ordered and bought a bead organizer for my glosses and a graded/steeped lipstick organizer from other companies. Really pleased with these because they are sturdy and organize a stash easily. I

Gio S. Avatar

Great post as usual. However, I would like to use this opportunity to ask: Does an organizer that fit the Rouge Gs by Guerlain exist? If not, how/where do you store them?

Christine Avatar

I personally prefer seeing the color and/or label, as most glosses have caps that are nondescript. I’ve never had an issue with storing them that way personally! I have had maybe half a dozen products leak on me, and they always leak on me before I’ve even put them away (so just laying down flat).

BB Avatar

I take it Viseart palettes fit in the regular palette organizer?

I wish they had something more like drawers and such. I’ll check and see what else they have!

Kristin P. Avatar

I have almost all of these, and they’re the best. My favorite is the lip gloss organizer, because I have a boatload of Bite Matte Cream Lip Crayons, and trying to store them in a normal lipstick organizer was not working out. The eye/lip liner one is also particularly innovative. My vanity furniture is entirely clear acrylic (table, chair, shelving, and organizers), so having this wide variety of options made my storage much more versatile.

Now if only they’d make a drawer system where each drawer is a standardized-sized pull-out version of the cream shadow organizer and the compact organizer, so you could utilize vertical space with these even more, that’d be awesome!

I’m so glad you did this review, because they’re a great little company and I hope they’re able to stay in business and keep coming out with cool new concepts!

Gillian Avatar

It took me roughly a tenth of a second to decide that I need these in my life! From the quick glance I had at the prices I’d say that over here in the UK we would be paying even more, but I’ve been searching for something like this since my collection started to get too big to manage with regular storage (and that was years ago). Lots of similar products I’d seen were just too small, holding about 12 lipsticks or so and that’s just not enough. These look awesome and I’m definitely going to seriously consider getting some of these. ?

LCF Avatar

Christine, you ought to seriously consider creating your own brand to manufacture makeup storage organisers. Given your expertise and critical eye, I have no doubt that your solutions would be perfection.

Elisa Avatar

I have a variety of these and love them. Mine have held up for over a year perfectly and help me save space and keep my makeup organized. The only one I regret buying is the cream shadow organizer and that’s only because it didn’t help me save any space in the drawer. I love these organizers so much and more are on my wish list.

zVintageFashionizta Avatar

I want some of these! I’m glad to hear that a lip gloss organizer is available because I don’t think anyone makes one of those.

Christine Avatar

I really loved the gloss holder! Super versatile. The lipstick holders are nice, but I love how I couldn’t find a gloss that DIDN’T fit the gloss organizer so you can have everything in one (I am sure somewhere out there is a gloss that is too big, lol).

Fran Avatar

Thanks for this review, Christine! When I get my room re-organized, I’m hoping to move makeup application from the bathroom to the bedroom (at least once I get foundation and concealers on). Some of these like they could be useful for keeping the things I’m most likely to reach for on a busy morning organized, and Amazon Prime makes it so easy! I like the idea of using the eyeliner and lipgloss organizers for keeping brushes organized, too. If my memory is correct, it seems like these are a bit less expensive than some of the acrylic organizers you reviewed a few months ago. I’d love to see a quick comparison!

Christine Avatar

These are a bit different since the ones I reviewed before were primarily drawer systems, whereas these are more like organizers and don’t really stack on top of each other – less space saving since it’s harder to go vertical! They could be used in a drawer, though most of these are too large to fit within an acrylic drawer 🙁 I’d say these are better for someone with more counter space or really wants to see labels/fronts easily and/or someone who wants to have larger drawers really organized but doesn’t need anything to stack easily.

Nancy T Avatar

Thank you so much for posting these, Christine, because I’m in serious need of storage options here! Especially interested in that large palette organizer/holder and the regular lipstick holder.

Susan Dowman Nevling Avatar

I think I need a couple palette organizers and maybe a few more lipstick organizers. I keep my liners and brushes in decorative mugs and glasses.

Cat Avatar

I’ve been looking for a palette organizer and I think I’m going to purchase one of these. I’m tired of the domino effect that happens quite often when I reach for one palette and the rest begin to fall over. I almost bought a document sorter from Office Max a few weeks ago but I knew I wouldn’t be happy with it. I love the clear acrylic and that you can remove the dividers to customize these. YAY!

Rachell Vicknair Avatar

I am trying to fit everything I have in a better organized space. I have used the acrylic containers and love being able to see my products easily. But, have you found a stack-able unit that would not take up much space? I am looking into a tool box that has neat storage compartments for pencils, and glosses, but does not have bigger spaces for a palette. And, well, I want it to look girly. 🙂 Any other suggestions for a rather large amount to store?

Christine Avatar

Well, I’m not sure exactly how large is large, but Muji drawers stack well. There are also larger, pre-made acrylic units that have multiple drawers. I personally use drawer chests (that you could put clothes in) because of the volume I have 🙂

Rachell Vicknair Avatar

You know, I have looked at cute vanitys, but they won’t have the storage space I need, either. So I am thinking a drawer like you have is what I’m going to have to do. I’d love to see pics if you’ve painted or fancied them up. And, if love to see how you organized the products so that the drawers are efficient.

Thank you! !! ♡

Mo Merrell Avatar

I have the lip gloss organizer and i love it! My lipsticks are stored in a Zahra rotating lipstick holder so I only needed the lip gloss organizer and it really is a treat to have. I was thinking about the palette organizer as well but eh, I think it’s a want and not a need.

Love your storage
