The formula is supposed to be "feather-light" and dry down to a "flattering finish that lasts all day." It is described as "smudge-proof, budge-proof, non-drying, with no chalkiness or crumbling." It is a lighter-weight, thin, spreadable liquid lipstick that dries down to a matte finish that doesn't feel heavy nor sink noticeably into deeper lip lines.

The pigmentation varied from semi-opaque to opaque, but in general, they weren't as boom! pigmented as most liquid lipsticks are on the market. For those who prefer to sheer out or use this type of product as a stain, that might be a major plus. The texture was very thin but spreadable and easy to work with.

Most shades lasted between five and seven hours on me and felt non-drying over time. They wore away gradually/flatteringly, and they were resistant to transfer until a meal.

As far as a formula by Lisa Eldridge, I did feel like this particular formula wasn't as innovative or as interesting as past releases have been. It felt comparable to other, more modern liquid lipsticks that dry down to a matte finish that have been released.

The formula is supposed to have "bold color payoff" in "one effortless swipe" that will last for 16 hours and have a "powdery matte finish" and a "lightweight feel." They are pigmented, matte, and fairly lightweight/flexible once they dry down, but they are lightly to moderately drying and not all shades performed as well. The lighter shades felt thicker, were heavier on, took longer to dry down, and broke down unevenly after a meal (particularly from the center of the lips).

The more mid-tone and deeper shades tended to apply better and felt more comfortable to wear, as they were thinner and more forgiving of lip texture and lip lines, plus they wore away more evenly over time. The larger issue with these is that while they are drying down, you cannot touch your lips together at all as they get quite tacky in that in-between time and will lift up product. Some shades took as long as three minutes to set while others were more like a minute or so.

The lighter shades lasted five to six hours before becoming unbearably uneven and needing a reapplication (well, full removal and then a fresh application). The darker shades lasted six to eight hours well and lingered into the 10th hour decently. I found the formula to be on the drying side, though not the worst I've come across over the years.

There was a heavier floral fragrance that was noticeable in the tube and as the product dried down, but it seemed to dissipate after it was fully set.

The formula is supposed to have a matte finish with "12-hour" wear with "one swipe, instant color" that is comfortable to wear and "transfer-proof." I think they've improved upon the longevity compared to the brand's Velvet Matte Lip Pencils of many years ago, as even the lighter shades are long-wearing, but 12-hour wear is a stretch (that's not a surprise, though).

The formula featured a soft setting process where the initial texture was more emollient, creamier, and easy to maneuver with along the curves of the lips, but it set to a lightly tacky finish that was transfer-resistant and remained flexible, so it was comfortable to wear. Most shades wore between five and six hours with a couple of the deeper hues lasting over six hours. It was a non-drying formula to wear over time.

The shades were pigmented in a single layer, and I felt like they were quite easy to use to get a nice, even line of color along the edges of my lips. It was also a more forgiving and flattering finish as it didn't emphasize lip lines or lip texture for the most part.

I think it is more comfortable than the prior formulation, but it has similar pitfalls; namely, the shades often appear a bit "cracked" once they dry down and I smile as the product doesn't seem to really pull into and smooth out while drying down.

The consistency was lightweight, spreadable, and fluid without being too watery or too viscous. As the formula dried down, it remained more flexible than the previous formula and definitely felt lighter-weight, which made it more comfortable to wear. Most shades were semi-opaque to opaque in one layer. They dried down fairly quickly but were forgiving if I pressed my lips together before the formula was fully set.

Unsurprisingly, they were not as long-wearing as the prior formula, but they still lasted between five and eight hours, depending on the vividness and depth of the shade. They were transfer-resistant until they came into contact with more oily food, and they were non-drying overall.

Formula Overview

The formula is billed as a "multi-purpose, liquid glow booster" that gives a "soft-focus" filter. It can be used on its own, over or under makeup, mixed with foundation, or as a standalone highlighter. It lived up to its claims, was easy to use, and didn't impede the wear of products I paired it with.

It worked to add all-over radiance when applied as a sheer layer over bare skin. I agree with the brand's recommendation to apply it all over with a sponge, as this ensured a very even, hydrated application that allowed me to build up the level of luminosity. It mixed well with thinner and thicker, sheerer and fuller coverage foundations without shortening their longevity or making them hard to apply.

As a standalone highlighter, they applied well with fingertips or brushes, though I found the easiest way to ensure over-application (that doe-foot is huge!) was to tap a bit on the back of my hand, then use a fingertip or stippling brush to apply to the high points of my face. I didn't have any issues with the formula lifting up base products.

It is very comparable to Charlotte Tilbury's Hollywood Flawless Filter (which also has several other similar competitors on the market), though I'd say the elf version has less of a fluid, thin feel. I think this helped it work better with thinner foundations as well as thicker, higher coverage formulations, and I didn't feel like it made anything better or worse--neutral--when used on its own or applied on the skin. At most, a little went a bit further as far as radiance and coverage went, than HFF.
