A Smoky Eye How-to Featuring COVERGIRL's Bombshell Collection
COVERGIRL recently launched their Bombshell collection, which features new cream eyeshadows, mascara, and liquid eyeliner. They asked me to create a tutorial featuring some of the new products, so here’s what I came up with: a sultry, smoky eye that can be paired with a softer pink lip or a more intense, fuchsia-hued lip–depending on just how bold you want to go.
Beginning January 5th through January 25th, all COVERGIRL products will be buy one, get one 50% off at ULTA Beauty. Â Plus, we’re giving away products from the COVERGIRL Bombshell collection with a $100 ULTA Beauty gift card! Â COVERGIRL will be hosting a Twitter Party on January 6th at 9PM EST, so be sure to check that out!

How-to:
- With a flat, firm brush, apply COVERGIRL Bombshell Shine Shadow by LashBlast in Ice Queen over the inner third of the lid. Lightly pat and pull the color across the skin, and then with very light, feathery motions, move the edge of the brush horizontally against the harsh edge to soften.
- Then, apply COVERGIRL Bombshell Shine Shadow by LashBlast in Ooh La Lilac to the middle and outer portions of the lid using another flat, firm brush. You’ll want to bring it just barely into the crease, and then soften that edge.
- To add some depth, apply COVERGIRL Bombshell Shine Shadow by LashBlast in Platinum Card to the outer corner and the outer crease using a smaller, flat and firm brush. Lightly pat and feather the brush across the skin to soften and blend out any harsh lines.
- Next, apply COVERGIRL Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Molten Black with a small, slightly tapered, crease brush to the outer corner and crease to provide additional darkness and depth to the look. Use short, small strokes and concentrate on blending out the color so it creates a gradient above and over the crease, towards the brow bone.
- Using the same small crease brush, apply COVERGIRL Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel along the edge of the soft black crease color, as this color will help to transition and ease the gradient as it moves towards the brow bone. For fairer complexions, you may want to use something just slightly darker than your natural skin tone.
- With a fluffy brush, apply your favorite highlight shade underneath the brow, along the brow bone, to accentuate and pull it forward.
- For cheeks, a soft, natural brown works well to give a little definition and color to cheeks without being dramatic. I lightly patted COVERGIRL Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel with fingertips just underneath my cheek bones.
- Now, for lips, you can choose your own adventure! Smoky eyes pair well with beiges, peaches, light pinks, or even bolder shades like fuchsia, berry, plum, and red. For a lighter lip color, I went with COVERGIRL LipPerfection LipColor in Darling. For the bolder lip color, I wore COVERGIRL LipPerfection LipColor in Bombshell.
With a bolder lip color
With a lighter lip color
It looks gorgeous!
Thanks, Rikki!
You look absolutely gorgeous, Christine.
Thank you, Theresa! 🙂
Beautiful look Christine! I love the lighter lip color on you!! The lippies and shadows look pretty good too
Thanks so much, Fancie!
I love this look on you, Christine! And I’m always curious about budget cream shadows. These look nice on!
If you try ’em, I’d love to hear how they work for you!
Your hair looks sooo soft.
🙂 That’s thanks to Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle, lol!
Oh my gosh, Christine, you get more beautiful every day! You’re stunning, girl!
Aww, thank you Stef!
I have really missed your “How To” eye looks especially so I’m really glad to see this though, to be honest, I don’t use Covergirl. I have one CG eye shadow that I like but I’m not likely to buy a lot more from the brand. But I really hope you’ll be doing more “How To’s”.
I’m sure you have something you could substitute with, if you wanted to recreate it!
Thanks, Mariella! 🙂
Thanks for this post Christine! I am not really a drugstore make-up gal but lately some drugstore brands have released some really great products which is nice for those who either can’t afford the higher end prices or even for those who can – to have to spend less to still get a great product. (Hello, Maybelline color tattoos! they have replaced my MAC paint pots and won me over with the recent release of matte shades)
You do such an amazing job with your blog. The “best of 2013” posts you just did are fantastic! Although I am surprised – no Bare Escentuals Ready mentioned? I thought maybe the neutral palette would have gotten your vote 🙂
In all seriousness though – thank you for your hard work, dedication and as many others have said – saving us money with your expert reviews and honest opinions!
You and Izzy are my favorite two bloggers and I check your sites multiple times a day for the latest!
Thanks so much, Jen! I actually did feature bareMinerals The Wild Thing in the top palettes post (http://www.temptalia.com/top-10-2013-best-makeup-palettes) 🙂 I opted for that one over the neutrals, because it was more my style/spoke loudly to me, lol!
Wooooh I love the eye look 😀 And that lipstick is FIERCE 😉
Thank you!!
What a beautiful look you pulled off! I love the look of any smoky eye. Cover Girl was my favorite drugstore brand, and this makes me want to go back and give them another go 🙂
Thanks so much, Celine! 🙂
Beautiful makeup look!
Thank you, Chantel!
You look so pretty! I especially love it with the more gentle lip colour – the look manages to be both sultry and cute! Great ‘process’ photos too, I love the way you’ve done the step-by-step! 🙂
Thank you!!
I think this is one of the best makeup looks I’ve seen you do! Especially the look with the lighter lip color. Looks stunning on you!
Thanks, Niki!
I hate to be boring but here goes…. The look is stunning on you! Especially with the more neutral look. I’ve never bought Cover Girl except their mascara (my waterproof always). I will be on that Ulta site on the 5th when it’s buy one and get the second fifty percent off. They will have this collection up then, won’t they?
I also like the tutorial. Thanks!
Yes, they will! It’s actually up now (but not on sale) 🙂
Thank you so much!
Christine, I must say how glad I am to see a full look! And a very nice one at that. You look particularly gorgeous here!
The tutorial is pretty well done. I like how useful the step-by-step photos are.
Am I supposed to comment with a favourite beauty tip here? Mine would be always to wear lip colour – even if I skip everything else (and skipping concealer is a scary one for me), a bit of a bright lip (with a big smile) will detract from all the flaws. Oh, and ALWAYS wear sunscreen!!!!
Yep, here! 🙂
I can’t really pull off pink lips unless it’s a really deep pink, but it looks lovely on you!
I love this soft smoky eye on you with the bolder lip! Great tutorial!
Thanks, Phyrra! 😀
My biggest beauty tip is to get a good night’s sleep – that’s when I look my best!
My beauty tip would be to hold makeup remover on a cotton ball over your eyelid for a few seconds to let it resolve and break up the eye makeup, before sweeping off the makeup!
I can never bring myself to wear the darkest shadows in any collection. In fact I usually use that to help determine if I’ll buy a palette or not, but these look really good on you and not too heavy. I like the lighter lips too.
The key is definitely just building up the darkness to the level that works for you – and by concentrating it just on the outer corner/crease, it keeps it from being too dark all-over! 🙂
Christine, you always look stunning but the last picture must be the most gorgeous pic I’ve ever seen on your blog!
That look is amazing on you.
Thank you, Tanya!
Very pretty! I have a few of the Covergirl LipColors and I like them, but I find that they are drying and stain soooo badly (something I don’t appreciate). Did you experience intense staining with these?
Hi Emme!
I don’t remember this one being drying or staining particularly bad, though I would expect that a darker shade would stain to some degree!
Beautiful! My fav beauty tip is to take the best care of your skin you possibly can. It will lead to smoother, more flawless makeup application.
My biggest beauty tip is to clean off messed up mascara with a dry q tip after the mascara has already dried up, cause it just flakes off c”
I love this look on you!
I can’t believe I saw this 1 hour after I returned from purchasing two CG mascaras. LOL.
Gorgeous! I love it! 🙂
I love their lipsticks! Great drugstore product! I can’t wait until the cream eyeshadows show up where I live!
You look gorgeous by the way 🙂 Happy New Year!
Happy new year!
Fantastic look Christine. Do the shadow pots and cream shadows crease? Also, I haven’t tried CG lippies since I was in HS because of the scent and taste. Has this been improved?
My tip is to wear blush and lipstick whether or not you feel like making up the rest of your face. It makes your eyes come alive and automatically puts you in a feel good mood even when not made up 🙂
Hey Christine!
Here are reviews for the Shadow Pots: http://www.temptalia.com/product/covergirl-flamed-out-shadow-pot
The Bombshell cream eyeshadows didn’t crease on me (the ones used in the tutorial)!
Excited to try Cover Girl. Haven’t used CG in some time . . .
Use eye primer.
Love the smokey eye and lighter lip! 🙂
Best beauty tip: Do your research!
(It’s easy. Just read temptalia.com) 😉
Thanks for the giveaway!
My fave trick is to use black pencil eyeliner all over the lid as a base and blend it out for a quick smokey eye.
Looks great with both lip colours!
My biggest beauty tip was to use Paula Dorf’s Perfect Illusion lip primer (it’s my HG), but now that it’s discontinued, I don’t know how I’m going to find a replacement!!
My best beauty tip is that less is really more when it comes to foundation. I think most people use way more than they really need, and, consequently, their makeup looks cakey or too fake.
I love the look you created-especially the one with the lighter lip. You are the queen of eyemakeup, IMO.
Beautiful!! Those eyeshadows would look gorgeous just by themselves all over the lid
Yeah, you could definitely just leave them as is – no black eyeshadow on top!
You look soooo beautiful!
Thanks, Aida! xo
I’ve missed your How To’s so much!! My tip is to wear lip balm underneath everything. It reduces the wear time, but I don’t have to worry about products drying my lips out or being overly sticky!
Love it – you look stunning! More such tutorials please!!
You look prettier than ever!
Aw, thanks Dora!
What a beautiful look! Gorgeous!!
Thanks, Valerie!
My beauty tip is to apply lipstick with a brush from outer corners to middle. It helps give an upturned look 🙂
Two tips that worked great for me are: fill your brows and curl your lashes always, makes a great difference to your face and eyes.
I cannot get that eyeliner to work on me at all. It just won’t write on me. And I am not a fan of that mascara. But it is gorgeous on you!
Interesting! like nothing comes out or it just skips/drags?
always wear sunscreen
Ohh… I do love Covergirl… they have one of the most value-for-money products in the drugstore! I just wish they have them in Asia, I wonder why they pulled out years ago and never came back!!
Just Gorgeous Dahling! Gorgeous!
Thanks so much, Ruby!
So gorgeous! My favorite makeup tip is to finish your makeup with a setting spray.
Thanks, Melanie! 🙂
Tip – use a bit of your concealer or foundation to brighten the inner eye after all of your other makeup is done, and use the same product with a small firm brush to make a really clean line at the outer edge of your eyeshadow – like the tape trick, without the tape!
My biggest beauty tip is to always set my makeup with a dusting of powder and drink plenty of water.
Love the icy iliac smoky eyes and the bright pink lip look. I’m going to try and copy it.
you look stunning!!!!
My tip is for liquid liner, if you have trouble with getting too much on the applicator for the inner corner of the eye, start at the center of the eye, go outwards, then go back and go from the inner corner to the center. No more weird thick beginnings to your liquid liner line.
Love this look! My favorite beauty tip is to leave your primer on for a few minutes before applying foundation.
My favorite beauty tip is nothing new to anyone. I love padding Channel translucent powder on my face right after I put my foundation on. It gives my skin very nice even texture.
Love the look… I learned from this blog… always blend your eyeshadows with a fluffly blending brush for a softer edge and gradient look
My beauty tip would be- after applying foundation, I take a square of toilet paper and press it over my face and then finish off with powder. It helps to keep the shine from creeping up faster throughout the day!
My favorite beauty tip is to always wear sunscreen. It’s something my mom’s always told me, especially stressing it in high school. I, of course, didn’t take her seriously until a few years later when I kept hearing/reading from beauty gurus how important it was or how much they regretted not adding it to their regime. It’s not a matter of whether you can see the sun out or not that day, because even on cloudy days, the invisible rays will still reach you and can do damage to your skin. I haven’t been able to see the affects of applying sunscreen, for the most part, every day yet, but I definitely hope I’ll have less wrinkles, sun spots, and overall healthier skin when I get older as a result of it!
You look glamorous! And even better with the lighter lip color, in my opinion. 🙂
If you don’t mind me asking, are any of the eyeshadow shades you used here similar to any of the shades in the Urban Decay Smoked or Naked 1-3 eyeshadow palettes? I wanted to try recreating this look you made because it’s just so lovely!
Hey Erika!
I would try something like UD Verve (N2), UD Pistol (N2) or UD Darkside (depending on whether you want a grayer or plummier look), Asphalt (Smoked). I think Blackout will be too harsh of a black, but Asphalt will darken without being super intense!
Thank you so much, Christine! So glad you replied to this! 🙂
I use MAC paints stilife as a eyeshadow primer every single day. The tube has lasted me a year and a half.
You are beautiful!
To best hold a curl in hard-to-curl lashes, only use waterproof mascara.
always fill in your eyebrows!
Pretty! I like the tip of using a transition color!
Instead of sweeping on eyeshadow, I pat it on with a brush, focusing on the inner corner of my eyelids. It prolongs the wear of shadow and minimizes creasing!
Use finger to blend cream eye shadow!
I like this look a lot. very lovely~ :3
Thanks, Michelle!
Beautiful! I always love your makeup. My beauty tip is to hold a tissue under your eye when using glitter or pigments so it won’t fall all over your face!
you look beautiful
Love the neutral lip look!
My tip: Always moisturize and prime before makeup.
Being moisturized & hydrated is the best advised I’ve recieived.
Oh, I would do a beautiful smoky eye with the charcoal and silver shadows, and a nice cat eye!
Left off my tip! I like to concentrate my mascara heavier on the outer upper lashes, helps to make my eyes really POP!
bold lips is my go to makeup
Love the look with the lighter lip color! My favorite beauty tip is to always apply a balm before any lip product, and to try to once or twice a week exfoliate your face or apply a clay mask. Also, remember to always clean your face before going to bed and remove makeup, it’s very important for a healthy and better looking skin in the future 🙂
Pretty! I love this with the more subtle lip, but I really like how this shows how just a simple change in lip colour makes a huge difference to the overall look! I don’t wear many bright lips, but this is encouraging me to try out a few different lips with the looks I make.
It is – the way you pair color can have such an impact on the overall look!
My favorite beauty tip is to let your moisturizer and eye cream soak into they skin before I put the rest of my make on.
Very pretty! I’ll be very interested to hear your thoughts on the longevity of the cream shadows. Nice work! 🙂
My favorite beauty tip is to use retinol at night. No matter what age we are, we can all begin to prevent or reduce the signs of aging.
One of the best makeup tips I’ve ever gotten was to apply all my eye makeup BEFORE applying my foundation. That way, if there’s any fallout or smudges, I can correct it/clean it up with my foundation after I’m finished
I enjoy reading your posts from your daily feed – I learn so much from you, not just about the products, but about all makeup in general. Which was your favorite product in this bunch?
Thanks, Jeanine!
I liked the color of Platinum! 😀 Bombshell lipstick will be nice in the summer!
I have dry skin. I have found that applying a little facial oil under my makeup really gives me a pretty glow, without looking oiyl.
Oily!
My tip would be to always wear mascara! It looks so nice on everyone and makes your eyes pop!
Exfoliation is key to perfect makeup! Lips, skin, everything.
Use a lip balm before applying lipstick.
Vaseline is a great makeup remover!
You are so gorgeous!
Thanks, Dora!
my tip: if you wet your eye makeup remove pads just a TINY bit w/hot water, it really boost the products ability to get into your lashes & remove all traces of mascara.
For us over 40 ladies, a good eye cream that sinks in before makeup and concealer applied. Works wonders!!!
Thnks for the giveaway…My best makeup tip is to finish your makeup with a setting spray
I like the tip about using tape to create and sharp clean cat eye or smoky eye at the ends of your eyes.
Use tape to create and clean edge for the other part of the lids
Love that lippie on you subtle but cute!
Beautiful! And you make it look so easy!
My favorite beauty tip – always – is sunscreen, no matter your coloring, no matter the time of year. Sunscreen every day, and don’t forget the backs of your hands. Your youthful-looking, healthy older self will thank you for it again and again.
My best beauty tip is to have fun and experiment with different colors once in a while!
My beauty tip is to always use an eyelash curler before mascara, it just makes your eyes pop.
Looks great! My favorite thing to do is to apply some gloss just in the center after your lipstick. Really makes your mouth stand out!
Drugstore products can surprise you sometimes!
The light pink lip is beautiful but the bold lip is awesome! Thank you, Christine 🙂
I love you tip about the different colors of lipsticks to use with the smokey eyes. You look beautiful with the bold lip!
My beauty tip is take time with foundation. Good skin makes everything look better
my favorite tip on this winter is to keep my skin moisturized as i am a dry skin beauty …:)
The mascara and the brighter lipstick are calling my name
Recently I read to use eyeshadow close to the same color as your eyebrows to darken them rather than a pencil and it has worked well for me.
Love the neutral lip look!
I use a toothbrush to get rid of dead skin on my lips and to make a smooth surface!
My favorite beauty tip is to do your eyeshadow first, then foundation. I’ve always done it the other way around and when I mess up I end up having to do the whole thing over again.
Hi Christine! I wish to ask, what eyeshadow brushes did you use for this one?
I don’t remember – I tried to see if I could from the photos, but all I for sure see is MAC’s 217.
This is a beautiful makeup!!!!!! i love that!!
Thank you!
This is great stuff! Thank you so much:)
Thanks, Ava!
