Pat McGrath

Their shipping turnaround times are really poor when ordering direct, and I have heard mostly horror stories about getting a response from customer service, which is a huge no-no for a luxury priced brand. I love the formulas of many of the products, so I hope to see some less pink-themed offerings in the future.

I like the idea of her “special shades” that are shifty and extra sparkly. I dislike basically everything else, haha. Dumb craft sequins in the bag my mini palette came in, ugly packaging (in my opinion, especially the lipsticks!), ridiculous prices, collaborating with Supreme, bad CS, the Star Wars launch fiasco, super overly filtered promo videos, that weird expensive “kit” for gluing rhinestones to your lips, repeating gold and pink shades in every palette… nah.

Tessa Avatar

Can’t argue with you about the gold & pink thing, although both are (almost) universally flattering. I’ve got an olive undertones and all of those gold tones do nothing for me. I wish she would do a elvish or forest-inspired palette with greens, oranges, rose gold and a shifting shade with green and silver.

Diane Avatar

I love the formula too (eyeshadow, lip gloss, lipsticks). I have good experience with the customer service but I’ve heard the horror stories too. I also love the fact that the mothership never came with ashy shade for my skintone.

I thought we’d had this question a week or so back and if so, my answer will seem repetitive. I only have one of the 6 pan palettes (or is it 8? I don’t use it enough to remember) and while the shadows are lovely, there are things I don’t like about PMG and I know that’s a bit of sacrilege. First, I don’t like her outrageous prices. Her shadows are good but no better than many brands that cost considerably less. I’m not thrilled that most of her products aren’t available in-store because if I’m spending that much, I was to see it for myself and swatch it first (and this explains the only PMG palette I own – it WAS available in-store!). And this is a personal thing and one I explained in my earlier reply. I resent her sort of co-opting the term “Mother” and expecting her acolytes to refer to her thus. I’m a mother and I’m also a daughter and I think the term “mother” is one that I consider special, an honour and, for me, is only owed to my own mother (now deceased). As much as I adored my mother in law, I never, ever liked calling her “mom”, though she asked me to do that as a sign of affection and family feeling after I married her son (before that, she was Mrs. K….). I so wish she’d invited me to call her either “Mom” or “Stella” (I’d have opted for the latter) but had I told her I really didn’t want to call her “mom”, it would have hurt her greatly and I wouldn’t have done that for anything in the world. So, you can see it’s a bit of a sensitive thorn in my side.

DonnaL Avatar

I don’t think Pat expects anyone to call her mother and I’m sure there are plenty of people who don’t. From what I understand, people in the industry started calling her that many years ago and the name stuck.

raja Avatar

Folks calling her Mother isn’t to belittle the position of motherhood. It’s specifically a title used in black queer spaces for women/femmes who are leaders in their community. No one is forcing you or anyone to call her mother/mom, but it’s weird to take issue with something that is very much based in a culture you don’t belong to.

Kesha Avatar

To be fair…she didn’t give herself the nickname “Mother”. Marc Jacobs attributed it to ball where they use “Mother” as a term of endearment for the head (mentor) of the ball house. After being called that since the 90’s it’s obviously something that was going to stick. Definitely wouldn’t say she was co-opting the name. I understand to a degree your resentment but I guess you can thank the people that worked with her all of these years for the title…not her ego or anything.

Mariella Avatar

Yikes….I guess I committed sacrilege indeed. Folks, this is purely MY issue…I’m not saying it’s something anyone else has to agree with or take on board. It’s a personal issue, that’s all! And it will remain personal (meaning it’s my issue). No one has to agree or disagree with me.

Kesha Avatar

Me responding to you was in no way to imply you are wrong for your feelings. I did however give how her being called Mother came about versus it being assumed she herself was “sort of co-opting” the name. I can’t speak for anyone else that replied to you but for me…how you feel is your right. But it doesn’t hurt to get clarity on something that you may have incorrectly assumed was the case when it wasn’t. You can still not like that so many chose to give her the nickname as a sign of respect…like I said….it’s your right. But if your irritation or disdain about it is also tied to you thinking she was trying to force it on people and she knighted herself to be a Mother you now know that part at least isn’t the case.

Swoozy Avatar

The ridiculously environmentally unfriendly packaging – there are somewhat fewer sequins than there used to be, but still too many. The redundancy of the color schemes of late. The fact that the nickname ‘mother’ makes me feel like a purchase is a gateway step to a cult. How unglamorous the lipstick packaging is (the bows on the Bridgerton collaborations are a step up). I appreciate that the makeup is gorgeous on people of color, the quality of the blush and e/s. The vinyl lipsticks are so nourishing and shiny. The black palettes are so luxurious feeling (although horrible environmentally, but she does have the cardstock palettes as well).

Katrina Avatar

In my opinion, what’s not to love. The fact that otters have had issues is not my experience. I have had I think two messed up orders ordering direct. Both times, a new item was overnighted, and a free product + discount was provided for future purposes.

I’ve also attended some of her masterclass offerings. She’s a hoot and you can truly tell how passionate she is, and also, how inclusive and body positive she is. The inclusive part, admittedly, does not affect me but it’s a nice bonus. The body positivity- as someone who struggles with self-esteem and image issues, she’s definetly firing on all cylinders in making sure no one feels that way around her or her products.

Lastly, I own every single palette, single, and special eye kit she’s ever launched. I have her skin products. I have her highlighters and blushes. And I’ve got probably 75% of the lip products she’s got. I’d have more but I don’t love lipstick. Which is not a reflection of her brand, I just don’t like lipstick. I use her tote as a gym bag.

I also don’t have the shipping issues others speak of.

So, again, for me anyways, what’s not to like?

Terry Garney Avatar

I totally disagree. I had a problem & customer service was AMAZING & FAST. I love her sequins in the packaging too. As far as the “MOTHER” thing, I never called my own mom that. It seemed so formal and it can be paired with a swear word to be VERY rude & disparaging. But I don’t blame anyone who uses it….it’s just not something I used for my late, beloved mom. I really don’t understand the negativity I read here. I love this brand & it’s creator.

brendacr1 Avatar

I have followed Pat from early on and I love her products, I have enough of her products to last me a long time. I have had to contact customer service and have been treated remarkably well. Shipping takes a long time I just know this and expect it, if I want to wait for it to come to Sephora I will. I am assuming that she puts gold in her palettes for people that have never purchased a palette before. The continuance of pink in her palettes confounds me so I just don’t purchase them. I would like something beautiful and new from her but that would just mean that I would spend more money on makeup and I really don’t need any more makeup. She is an artist and artists create and I will admire from near or far her next creation.

Christine Avatar

The dumb sequins in the package. The very very cheap packaging of the products themselves, which certainly don’t align with their high prices. Any one of the above would be enough to put me off (which is where I am: off.)

Genevieve Avatar

Like: I think PMG is a stellar brand and her products are top notch. Her earlier palettes contained a wide variety of shades and really are/were brilliant.
Personally I have not experienced (luckily) the problems others have had re deliveries.

What I don’t like about PMG: The naming of her palettes can be very confusing with the play on words and sometimes it’s tricky to know which eye palette you are talking about or referring to.
Secondly, they are quite expensive – but I guess that goes with the luxury territory.
I must admit I wasn’t a fan over the sequins spilling out everywhere when I opened the mini lipstick bag I ordered….I didn’t think the lipsticks were that great actually.
But my real ‘beef’ is the huge number of pink themed palettes that she has released over the past couple of years. Over and over again…

Kesha Avatar

So the customer service (or lack there of) is definitely a huge problem. That and the pink overkill that’s been going on for far too long. The CS didn’t use to be bad at all but I think at some point the brand got too big and the CS just hasn’t kept up. Disappointing for sure.

I love her formulas…some of the best out there. I’m hoping for something truly different and captivating though moving forward. I’d rather see less releases every year if it meant that the creativity and innovation that she is known for is back versus the mass production of collections that are all starting to look the same.

Megan Avatar

I’ve had multiple horror story experiences with CS and pretty much reached my end with ordering from their website… that being said, none of her recent releases have interested me anyway since its nonstop pink and gold. I’ll stick to Natasha Denona for quality eyeshadows since her palettes actually inspire/innovate, even if I do love PMG quality and sparkly shades

Helene Avatar

I’ve never tried her skin products, blushes and such, I have quite a few of her eyeshadow palettes and have tried some different lipsticks. I did try the mascara.
The was a sort of disclaimer, I mean maybe I’d love or dislike the face products, I just can’t tell. So, anyway, I have bought from the brand since before the palettes unless I’m mistaken. The first thing I got was a kit with some eyeshadows, a brush, an eyeliner and a lid gloss. The last thing I bought was the latest 18 pan palette.
I think PMG is a brand I so want to love, but I just can’t. I really liked the earlier colour stories, but wet brush or dry or even finger, I get fall down both at application and over time. This can be because of my hooded eyes, or skin chemistry or something, or maybe I’m really bad at applying makeup.
I loved the lipstick called Major Red, it’s DC’ed, I hate the matte formula, it feels awful on my lips, but that is a fact for some other brands matte lipsticks as well.
The mascara was just OK, I’ve tried loads that I fine better.

So, what do I like, nothing much to be honest. The customer service when I was in contact with them, when I had an order cancelled even though it was first confirmed made me so disappointed.
The shipping is so much slower than for example CP.
I did like her palettes in the beginning, now I can’t recall what the later looked like, I find the colour stories have gone from fun, interesting and good to boring and same old all over again.
I do like the older palettes, and the two 6 pans I have and that is it.

i have had no trouble with their customer service. always get a response within a day and they send out stuff super quick. i had the divine rose palette arrive with the packaging broken and they resent a new one instantly and it arrived two days later. i find their delivery times and customer service so good

Thanks Christine for all that you do. I rely on Temptalia.com for figuring out what to buy in makeup.
I am not a huge fan of the Bridgerton series, maybe too sexy for my taste? However the esthetic is everything. I purchased the Bridgerton 1 collection and have also bought the Bridgerton 2 pallet as well as other items when they are on sale. I feel the pricing is reasonable during Black Friday. I think Bridgerton is my favorite so far, mostly because I get intimidated when confronted with a lot of colors so it’s more fun to play with the six pan situations. As an aside my SO detests my forays into editorial colorful makeup but he always compliments me when I wear my Bridgerton. I haven’t had any issues with ordering from PMG so far, the products are great and I love pink so I can’t say anything bad.
My only wish is that PMG would offer a small pallet of just the astral shades because honestly I would prefer that to acquiring the Huetopian Dreams pallet. It’s a given though that I will give in and buy it Black Friday so that’s probably why it’s not a thing. Fans will buy the whole mothership to get the astral shades.
PS It’s shocking how often I see Christine’s swatches and lips! copped by other websites.

What I like – packaging aesthetic and sometimes the pan design
What I don’t like – the quality, the formulas, the color stories, the price tag and sometimes the packaging – I have some lipsticks whose components just kind of fell apart one day. At $40 a pop, that’s not reasonable.
Semi-like – the special shades are pretty, but exactly the same quality as singles I got from….asos? Years ago. That she puts 1-3 in a palette with shitty mattes and everything is pink…nope.
The best thing PMG did *per my likes* were the luxe trance lipsticks….though the colors weren’t actually very good, objectively (I own five or six and, reds aside, the nudey pinks are…actually not very flattering on. at least on my skin tone); and I’d be back on board if they created new, better colors and revived that lipstick formula.

I know I’m in the minority but I don’t get the insane hype surrounding her brand. I’ve tried multiple products, lipsticks, balm, glosses, mascara, lip and eyeliner, a single shadow and the Mothership Subliminal I palette and nothing impressed me all that much. The palette is actually the most disappointing makeup purchase I’ve ever made and I got it for 30% off. The mattes are quite powdery but easy to work with but my biggest problem were the metallics and special shades, which were dry, not that pigmented and overall just lackluster. I had to build them up in 2-3 layers to get them to look on my eyes the way they do in the pan. I didn’t get the one swipe, insane pigmentation and high shine experience that everyone claims. My Sydney Grace, Devinah Cosmetics, Give Me Glow and JD Glow shadows are much better quality and significantly less expensive. The blushes are nice but the formula didn’t blow me away and none of the other products I’ve bought became staples in my collection. The best product of hers I tried is the Eyedole in Divine Mink, a stunning smooth metallic minky taupe, which is what I expected the Mothership shadows to be. I feel like the hype around her brand borders on fetishism at this point and anyone that expressed publicly that they don’t like a product gets attacked. I’ve seen it myself and have been the recipient of it.

I have both holiday palettes-Celestial Divinity and Celestial Odyssey-and 3 shades of blush (Lovestruck, Cherish, and Divine Rose). On all, I love the colors and have no complaint about the application or texture. Now if only shades would be made available as single shadows so I could get VR Sextraterrestrial… but I guess I can always check the direct site and Sephora for sales on Divine Rose II.

Sarah Avatar

I think PMG is an insanely beautiful brand! The lipsticks are lovely and the eyeshadows are fun and unique. However I have one major issue…which maybe someone can help me with. I cannot for the life of me get the special shades and glitters to stay on my eyes. They crease…and pretty much disappear from my eyes an hour after I apply them. It’s super frustrating. I’ve tried eye primer, concealer glitter primer none of it works.
