Tinted Lip Balm

It’s really rare to find one that’s tinted, long-wearing, and as hydrating as a regular lip balm, IMO! I prefer a clear lip balm that is very hydrating for night time and then wearing lipstick/gloss during the day.

My main goal with a lip balm is one that keeps my lips from drying out. That’s all I look for– tints tend to rub off onto the sheets when I sleep, so they’re far from ideal. Although I do have a soft spot for lip balms that smell like something nice– any scent will do.

If I want shinier color, then I’ll go with a gloss.

I love the idea of it. I have no pigment to my lips so prefer to have at least a semi sheer and/or buildable wash of color. Unfortunately, I haven’t met a tinted balm that I am fully in love with. I find that many have a weird taste, don’t actually show up on my lips or are so barely there it is like “what is the point”, or aren’t all that hydrating. If I had more pigmented lips I’d quit my never ending search for a tint I like well enough to wear daily and just stick to pretty sheer glosses or clear balms that truly hydrate.

I absolutely love tinted balms. Especially BB but they are pricey. Also Chantecaille, the colors from summer 2020 esp Beach Rose. It’s true, they are fleeting but I don’t mind reapplying. Probably my favorite item along with mascara.

I don’t wear makeup, so a tinted lip balm is the closest I get to experimenting. I really don’t like when they have a thin formula, like Nivea’s, but that’s pretty much it.

The best tinted lip balm I’ve found so far, that keeps my lips hydrated all day, is Peripera Milk Moist. So of course it’s discontinued.

I’ve switched almost exclusively to tinted balms over the last few years because they’re so comfortable and are easy to reapply without a mirror. My favorites are Clinique Almost Lipstick Black Honey (my 20+ yr love), YSL Voluptu Shine, Gucci Sheer and tinted balm and Fresh Advanced Therapy (I use Dream, the pink tint, and clear interchangeably)

I like the NARS Afterglow lip balms, and there are some ELF ones out at the moment which are a cheaper option.

Those Peeps x ColourPop lip balms in the image look similar to the old Cover Girl Lip Slicks…I loved those so much but they weren’t sold in the UK. A friend bought me some about 20 years ago and I wore nothing else for years…plus Maybelline Cool Effect shadow.

Honestly I’m not that into them. I’m not a big fan of sheer lip colors to begin with and I’ve run into many that are so sheer any tint they have doesn’t show up on my lips. When I do want something that’s more of a tint, I’d rather use a plain balm then tap on some lipstick over it. At least that way I’m certain to get the color intensity I’m looking for.
