Urban Decay Naked Metal Mania Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Naked Metal Mania
Urban Decay Naked Metal Mania Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.44 oz.) is a new, limited edition 12-pan palette that included a mix of shimmers and mattes across a mostly neutral color story with a pop of purple and silver. The quality was better than it has been for Urban Decay’s eyeshadow formulas (particularly the shimmers).

Formula Overview
$19.00/0.06 oz. - $316.67 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have "high-pigment" with "ultra-smooth color payoff with maximum blendability" while being long-wearing. The brand is confusing, as they claim "up to 12 hours."
The majority of the shades I tested were pigmented--semi-opaque to opaque--with the matte finish having the most variance. The lighter matte shades tended to be thinner, more powdery, and sheerer as a result of those texture differences. The more satin-to-pearl shimmer shades tended to be thinner, too, and they sometimes applied more unevenly or had to be built up. The higher-sheen shimmer shades tended to be pigmented, lightly creamy, and blendable with good adhesion.
They wore between eight and nine hours on average, which is solid wear time but similar to a lot of other powder eyeshadows for me, so it wasn't extra long-wearing in context.
In comparison to the last iteration of the brand's eyeshadow formula, it did not feel vastly different. The mattes seemed a little thinner and a touch more powdery, while the shimmers were a touch thicker on average with some of the more pearl-like finishes having weaker coverage and felt too firmly-pressed into the pan and looked thinner on, so they weren't as flattering to wear.

The formula is supposed to have "high-pigment" with "ultra-smooth color payoff with maximum blendability" while being long-wearing. The brand is confusing, as they claim "up to 12 hours."

There are a couple of pretty shades within a mostly forgettable palette. Also looks like some of them are pretty fragile. I am glad to see a better offering from UD overall. I think they have ridden the “Naked” train about as far as they can.
I’m glad that this isn’t as disappointing as I’d feared. Still, it’s not worth shelling out the $$$ for (at least to me). I am still rooting for UD somehow since it was my first makeup love!
As far as marketing goes, I don’t understand why UD doesn’t just drop the “Naked” name & theme, keep the similar hard-plastic bar-shaped packaging and format, and just go HAM on the color stories. And, of course, perfect the formula. To have a “Metal Mania” palette without a respectable black is unforgivable. That said, I hope people who like the color story really enjoy this one.
At best we can say that it’s better than some of the other offerings that UD have put out lately, but it seems that the metallic shades are prone to breaking. There are a couple of neutral metallic shades that I like, but the overall colour story is confused.
Spike Studs is one of the prettiest shadows I’ve searched recently. I overall the whole palette is not bad at all, but I can’t buy it for one shade. UD has been on an upswing for a while so I really hope this continues.
I’m happy this scored so well. Not that I intend to buy it, even though I love a few of the shades. I so want UD to do well, this makes it seem like they are going the right way after straying for many years.
Not for me in terms of the colours (I do like Scene but have dupes) and also the fragility – that this arrived to you with so many of the pans having suffered (just one more reason I like shopping in person) – either on its own would be a disincentive for me. As Elizabeth Kulpa said, UD should just stop slapping the “Naked” moniker on EVERYTHING (and maybe bring back the original Naked and Naked2 with their original formulas).
Glad it’s better quality, maybe they’re listening? However, the shades that make it more metal and less naked got the lower scores. Aside from the silver, I would be buying a naked palette. Pass.
This is actually a rather pretty palette despite yours arriving smashed.
I’m afraid to blink… because this seems almost too good to be true; could it be that UD is turning around? I think that this is a positive, yet tentative sign that they may be! And I really love this palette!
Why are they all broken? Are you going to return it for one that isn’t? I can understand when one shade arrives broken because of careless packaging and handling, but half of your palette is shattered.
Ulta shipped it pretty poorly, and I’m never going to use it again beyond the review, so I didn’t want to deal with returning it and waiting for a new one!
