Sapphires are pretty nifty as they come in a massive range in colors. The “common” color is a rich blue, but within blue, it really can range from pale aqua to nearly blue-black.

I learned about the range of colors when I redesigned my wedding set to be all about sapphires and later a necklace in tribute of Mellan (and reusing my old engagement stone)! You can find sapphires in these hues, too: yellow, orange, lavender, green, peach, pink, purple, and even gray.

That being said, it feels a little less focused and “cheating” with so many options, so I will lean into the lighter blue to deeper blue, sometimes leaning teal, spectrum over the less common shades — but you may find the spectrum of blue complemented by the less common shades.

About This Series

Each look idea is centered around a “quad” of four shades with the expectation that one might bring in the appropriate brow bone or additional transitional shade based on skin tone. Consider these ideas a jumping off point with four “core” colors that can inspire your next look. For reference, based on how I usually apply makeup, I would consider applying the shades in this order: inner lid, middle of lid, outer lid/crease, and crease/above crease or lid.

Please do a short history of the development of the Mellan memorial necklace. With pix. After the development of the palettes, that might be your readers’ favorite story. There are lots of labs. I’m always saying (yes, aloud, and to my dogs, who truly need dogsplaining) No. Too big a blockhead. No, that one verges on a fox red, but he’s thin enough. Perfect chocolate version, nice. Oooh, just right, but she’s a girl. Mellan truly embodies a heart dog, and if it is not too personal or too hard, we’d love to see what you designed. PS, grand combos as usual.

I absolutely love these combinations that you come up with Christine. What has thrilled me the most is your pairing of shades from your On the Horizon palette because these are the very same combinations that I use myself: Heart Dog, Magellan’s Light and Phoenix Awakes for a more neutral look and Heart Dog, Earthbound and either Flying High or Calming Presence for a more cool toned look that works well when I am wearing navy and green colours myself.
