ColourPop Matte About Hue Palette can be worn alone, which I’ve shared 10 different color combinations for below, but it’s also a palette that pairs well with your favorite shimmers and other palettes that may need more colorful mattes to make them more versatile. I’ve also included seven ways to incorporate single shimmer shades, like Super Shock Shadows, with the palette and pulled some shimmers from their other mega-palette It’s a Mood!

About This Series

Each look idea is centered around a “quad” of four shades with the expectation that one might bring in the appropriate brow bone or additional transitional shade based on skin tone. Consider these ideas a jumping off point with four “core” colors that can inspire your next look. For reference, based on how I usually apply makeup, I would consider applying the shades in this order: inner lid, middle of lid, outer lid/crease, and crease/above crease or lid.

Today’s color combinations are inspired by ColourPop’s Smoke ‘n’ Roses mega eyeshadow palette , which felt like a waste of a theme! There was so much that could have been done there. First and foremost, roses come in a variety of shades, undertones, and depth. There are pale and pastel roses that range from near-white to buttery yellow to soft orange, along with a slew of pinkish-white to light pink. There are an abundance of roses with deep, rich hues that go from true red to burgundy to purple.

This past spring, I had nearly 30 different rose shrubs and trees planted in my frontyard (not all of them survived, a tale for another day, but we planted some of the replacements a month ago!). You can see the many varieties of David Austin English roses for a reference point, but there are lots of varieties of roses beyond there.

There are several roses that appear more two-toned, like Boscobel (coral-pink), Queen of Sweden (warm pink that fades to light pink over time), Enchanted Peace (yellowy to pink-red), and Arctic Blue (pink-lilac with peach reverse).

These combos are less about the Smoke ‘n’ Roses palette and merely to showcase the range of hues that roses can be, plus using stems and leaves as accents. In a smokier take on rose hues, I’d lean into slightly more faded and deeper hues with earthy elements (think grungy neutrals to represent mulch, dirt, thorns, dying blooms)… for another day, perhaps.

December birthstones include tanzanite, turquoise, and zircon — very much a blue-dominated gem selection! Tanzanite is an interesting gem as it noted for its deep, saturated blue to violet hues, which can come naturally or from heating a gem, and unheated tanzanite stones can run murky green-brown to warmer purple.

Mellan was a December baby (born on Christmas Eve, actually), and after he passed, I decided to incorporate his birthstone–tanzanite–into a pendant necklace I was already leaning towards making (using my previous engagement ring diamond). I wanted to have a crescent moon with a mix of sapphires offset and subtly connected to give the illusion of stars in the sky.

The featured image is of the finished piece, and the tanzanite stone is the largest, more oval-shaped gem that flashes blue-violet, which is illuminated by a band of diamonds (to represent Mellan now up in the stars). The other colored gemstones are all various shades of sapphire, which complement my updated wedding ring set (done in sapphire, which is my birthstone, and one of the first gifts hubby, then-boyfriend, gave me was a sapphire bracelet).

Both pieces were designed in collaboration with Lauryn Volovar at Earth’s Treasury, and both were excellent experiences (in case there’s confusion, this is not sponsored and both pieces of jewelry were paid for by me). I know when I last mentioned the pendant, a few readers asked for more information on it, so… here you go 🙂

I’ve focused my opal-inspired choices to duochromes and multichromes, while favoring pink/red for tourmaline (one of the most popular to buy) and aqua/teal (a popular alternative to pink/red). I’ve used some of the other hues tourmalines can come in as accent colors.

I learned about the range of colors when I redesigned my wedding set to be all about sapphires and later a necklace in tribute of Mellan (and reusing my old engagement stone)! You can find sapphires in these hues, too: yellow, orange, lavender, green, peach, pink, purple, and even gray.

That being said, it feels a little less focused and “cheating” with so many options, so I will lean into the lighter blue to deeper blue, sometimes leaning teal, spectrum over the less common shades — but you may find the spectrum of blue complemented by the less common shades.
